The PeoplePerHour nomenclature

Many of our terms have interchangeable synonyms but we try to stick with a single "official" version to avoid confusion:

Projects vs Offers - a Offer is like a item on the menu with a specific price, wheres a Project is like when a diner asks the chef for something custom and the price depends on the request. Our list of Offers is like a store front where Buyers can browse and purchase what is on offer. A Project is for when a Buyer needs something specific and wants to put it out for tender.

The Basics

PeoplePerHour is a freelancing marketplace connecting small businesses (known as "Buyers") with a vast pool of talented freelancers ("Freelancers") offering every business service you can imagine from copywriting to logo design, web development to business administration, or writing articles.

Buyers can hire Freelancers in one of three ways for PPH:

  1. By purchasing an Offer, which is a pre-packaged, fixed price service that can be delivered within a specified timescale (anything from a matter of hours up to 5 days). Offers are ideal for either small service needs or to try out a Freelancer before using their services for much larger projects,
  2. By posting a project and defining exactly the scope of their project. The Buyer then receives custom proposals from available Freelancers who explain why they are the best person for the project and at what price.
  3. Browsing profiles and contacting Freelancers directly to receive custom proposals.

Through whichever method that a Buyer and Freelancer begin working together, the Buyer pays into an Escrow account money so that the Freelancer can start work. For a custom project, this money is an agreed deposit amount, for an Offer the money paid into Escrow is the full purchase price.

This money is only released to the Freelancer when the project has been Done! It is against our T&C's to start working with a Freelancer/Buyer if the Proposal is not approved and the deposit is not under Escrow.

All communications, payments and other actions between a Buyer and Freelancer are exchanged and tracked seamlessly through a tool on PPH called the WorkStream. In the WorkStream, the Buyer and Freelancer can continue to working together after the initial job by simply agreeing to further custom proposals.

About PeoplePerHour

We empower people worldwide to live their work dream building their business from the ground up and becoming financially and professionally independent.

Our purpose comes first

We are a purpose-driven business. Everything we do stems from our desire to empower people worldwide to live their work dream, building their business from the ground up and becoming financially and professionally independent.

PeoplePerHour is an invaluable resource for small businesses in the UK and outside - giving them access to expert freelance talent on-demand so they can stay lean and flexible while growing.

Servants of the freelance economy since 2007

We’ve been serving the freelance economy since 2007, being one of the first pioneers of the now ubiquitous on-demand economy.

Since then we’ve amassed a community of over 10 million skilled freelancers, served almost 1 million businesses across over 180 countries and paid out more than £130 million to freelancers over the years.

It still feels like day one

We believe that the freelance economy is still at its infancy. We take the view that our duty is to serve it as holistically as we can, to bring our mission of allowing people to live their work dream to everyone.

We constantly push the boundary by launching new products, investing our organic profits in new product development not just on the PeoplePerHour platform but also others in adjacent markets serving more specialised use cases. TalentDesk.io is our latest example of that - an enterprise SaaS product that allows large corporations to manage all their freelance workforce easily and seamlessly in one place, at scale.

Debunking the archaic 9-to-5 work model

PeoplePerHour started in 2007 with a pen, pad and telephone. A lot has changed since then but our goals remain the same; connect clients to our community of expert freelancers who are available to hire by the hour or project; provide flexibility to work when it suits you, outside the archaic 9-to-5 day; and enable people to live their work dream.

So far we’ve connected over 1 million Buyers and freelancers and paid over £100 million to freelancers - We think we might be onto something.

15+ years

Founded in 2007 with a simple vision to connect clients to freelancers and empower people to live their work dream. Still founder owned and led — and the longest running freelance service in the UK — we continue to innovate and grow the online freelance community.

The PeoplePerHour culture

We love what we do and collaborate every day hungry to change the world of work

Fostering a climate for constant innovation

Our culture centres on constant innovation. We are still founder-led, independent and run the business with a very long term view. We take decisions not for next month or next quarter but for decades down the line. We work collaboratively, bringing great minds of different skill-sets together to solve challenging problems that constantly keep raising the quality bar of our products and deliver an enhanced customer experience.

We do this by keeping truthful to our values.

We all collaborate together

Everyone cares about what everyone else is doing. We don’t stick to our little patch in the corner, we all care about the overall result and what each of us is doing.

We believe that great minds actually don’t think alike, and that a diverse skill-set of bright people coming together, challenging each other, generates a better result.

We act like owners

They say that owners care about rubbish on the floor, they don’t see it and think it’s the cleaners job, they pick it up.

At PeoplePerHour there is nowhere to hide, we have no room for complacency, politics and passing the buck. We all act like owners, are owners, and take responsibility and accountability for our actions, and more; because we all care about the overall outcome.

We stay hungry

Over a decade into our long journey, even though we are now profitable and more comfortable than at the start, we certainly don’t get complacent.

We are still hungry and keep pushing the boundary for more, for better, constantly improving our products and investing in a better experience for our customers.

We love the challenge and keep learning

We are all a bunch of inquisitive people who love learning, pushing ourselves and those around us. We love exploring sides of people that we never thought we had.

We’ve had people join us for admin roles and turn into PR’s, people join in payments and turn into QA’s, tech people grow into Product functions, others go into Data Science and so on. We believe that with the right mindset, hunger and determinations anything is possible, and we have proved that many times over.

We are brutally honest

At PeoplePerHour, everyone will tell you that there is no sugar-coating, no massaging, no walking on eggshells. We are all proud of our work. Proud of the purpose we serve and therefore fiercely protective of it.

Which is why we say things as they are, straight and direct. Because without brutal honesty, greatness cannot be achieved. We believe that sugarcoating results in a climate that fosters mediocrity and politics, versus meritocracy and greatness. We choose the latter.

Freedom

We believe the future of work is centred around freedom. Freedom to choose how you work, where you work and for you to be in control of your own time.

Openness

There’s never a bad idea at PeoplePerHour. Everybody is open to being asked why or how, and nothing is set in stone. It’s this shared openness which enables us to be flexible and to investigate alternative ways to bring ideas to the platform.

Change

The way the world works is going through a massive change thanks to innovations in technology. Our team has a finger on the pulse, always testing, adapting and innovating to push the boundaries of the industry.

The PeoplePerHour team

We’re a quirky bunch, but we all share the same core values: we’re passionate, energetic, committed and gutsy. Most of all we believe and celebrate our cause which is to empower people to live their work dream.

Our full-time team span the globe; from London to Athens, Manilla to Hyderabad and more! The best bit? Whenever we need a helping hand, we can turn to our ever-growing PeoplePerHour community to hire one of thousands of skilled freelancers around the world. They help bring PeoplePerHour to life and are full of great ideas as they use the site, contributing to the magic every single day!

PPH Staff

Xenios Thrasyvoulou (Founder & CEO)

Born on labour day Xenios has been tasked by cosmic forces to disrupt the labour market. He started PeoplePerHour in mid 2007 manually micro-brokering small projects between business and freelancers using pen, paper and a phone (occasionally email too!).

Today, 700K+ lines of code later, the site serves over 1m people worldwide, and Xenios has gone from pen % paper to being on BBC News, Bloomberg, Wired, Forbes, the Financial Times, and many more, as a thought leader in the burgeoning freelance / on-demand economy.

When not working (which isn’t very often), he blogs , paints, visits Art galleries, cooks a messy meal (more often than not too close to burning his place down), plays sports or watches movies. He holds an MA & MEng from the University of Cambridge and did a short stint at Harvard Business School - enough to convince him never to do an MBA!

Xenios is originally from Cyprus.

Tom Fotherby (Chief Technology Officer)

Tom started working at PPH in 2008 and was the first full time developer. Tom remembers the days where the technical landscape was quaint – where we didn’t use Amazon Web Services, or GitHub, where adding rounded-corners to a button took a hour to do, where being a “full stack developer” was actually normal, rather than the superpower it is today.

Grow with us

We’re shaping the future of work, with new products to discover, connect and manage any project. We’ve already empowered millions of people worldwide to become freelancers and connected 1.2 million clients to freelancers. For careers visit https://www.peopleperhour.com/careers

The collaboration hub - Meet project stream (The Workstream)

A good freelancer knows that managing a project takes a lot more than just delivering the goods at the end of a project. Freelancers need to collaborate, re-think and respond. That’s why we built project streams — our secret weapon to keep collaboration during projects organised. Easily communicate with your Buyers, share assets and gather feedback, all in one place.

Your proposal, your way

When a project takes your eye, complete a proposal and respond to the Buyer. If you have questions – ask them, if you have suggestions – make them. Set realistic budgets and achievable milestones. It’s that easy! You’re protected from the moment your proposal is selected as Buyers pay a deposit into an escrow account, which is held safe until you complete the project and raise an invoice.

Easy invoicing

Once you’ve completed a project, effortlessly raise an invoice directly from your project stream. Everything is prepared for you — all invoice data is automatically populated based on your project. You decide if you’re ready to invoice the full amount or enter your own values. Your Buyer is notified instantly and once they authorise payment funds are moved from the project’s protected escrow account into your PeoplePerHour account.

Build lasting relationships with clients

Clients love completing projects through PeoplePerHour because they are engaged in the new skills and abilities you provide. During a project, you’ll uncover many insights to your client’s business and these are a great opportunity to develop lasting working relationships. The project stream is designed for you to manage ongoing and recurring work including auto-invoicing on set dates.

Provide quality experiences

PeoplePerHour is a professional platform and clients expect professional experiences. Your client reviews you at the end of every project on the quality of their experience. Freelancers who are consistently rated highly benefit from higher rankings, increased visibility and greater success on the platform.

Trust and Safety

PeoplePerHour is a community built around trust and your safety is our primary concern. A lot of work happens behind the scenes at PPH to keep the community safe but we also offer key tools so that you can also use the marketplace safely, whether buying or selling services.

Buying Safely

How does PeoplePerHour protect buyers?

We strive to keep PeoplePerHour a safe space to collaborate and make great work happen. In order for you to collaborate in confidence, we offer certain protection towards our buyers. To benefit from this protection it is essential that you keep all communication with the freelancers on our platform so we can monitor and assess the situation objectively.

  1. Your money is protected When you start your project your deposit is kept safely in the escrow account. Only once you are happy with the work and have received all the agreed deliverables, payments to freelancers will be released.
  2. We are at your disposal We are here to help. Whether you’re experiencing technical issues or a collaboration problem, our responsive customer support team will help you solve them quickly. They are available through live chat or you can submit a request and the team gets back to you within 72 hours.
  3. We ban fraud We monitor every transaction 24/7 and use identity identification to protect our users from phishing, fraud and identity theft. If we notice anything out of the ordinary, our dedicated payment specialists will act immediately to stop fraudulent transactions. You have our promise that we will never share your personal details without your permission or ask for any sensitive information unless we’re required to do so by the law.
  4. You own the copyrights Copyright law is complicated. Fortunately, when you outsource through us, it is simple: as soon as the payment is made, you instantly own the copyrights of the work.
  5. We intervene if needed In the rare case, you have a dispute with your freelancer PeoplePerHour can mediate and adjust invoices for work that is not clearly related to either the project requirements or your instructions in the workstream.

Choosing a Freelancer

You will find lots of information available about the Freelancer on PPH to help you choose wisely including:

  1. Feedback reviews, a key tool to see the track record of the Freelancer from other projects completed on PPH.
  2. Endorsements, testimonials from clients, colleagues and peers from outside PPH
  3. Social connections, verified links to the individual's Facebook or LinkedIn account can provide an extra layer of trust.
  4. Portfolio, examples of the Freelancer's work.
How do I find people that are reliable and trusted?

The best way to ensure you work well with someone is to simply try it. On PeoplePerHour you can simply start working with someone for as little as one hour and see how it goes. Not much can go wrong if all you’ve wasted is one hour.

If you are committing to a larger amount of work we recommend that you look at the Freelancers profile and past reviews.

We highly recommend you use the escrow facility sensibly, only release funds when you get the work agreed for the project or particular milestone you set with the freelancer.

How do I know the person I hired will deliver?

PPH is a marketplace for talented freelance professionals to offer their services. We have several tools in place to help make sure that you have a successful experience and get your Job done.

Keep communications in the WorkStream

The WorkStream is a tool to keep track of all communications connected with a particular project. A WorkStream is created when you first start communicating with a particular Freelancer. If there is any confusion it is also an important record to refer back to, and in the unlikely event that you need PPH support to resolve a Dispute with a Freelancer, the WorkStream is used as the sole indisputable evidence to determine a fair outcome.

Depositing funds in Escrow

To protect Buyers and Freelancers alike, we provide an Escrow system where a Buyer can deposit funds at the start of a project so that the Freelancer has the confidence to start work but also so that the Buyer does not have to risk paying any money upfront. Funds are released to the Freelancer as payment by the Buyer when they are happy that the project has been completed.

Payment for Project Done

When work has been completed your Freelancer will raise an invoice to you through the WorkStream. Once you have checked the work delivered and you are happy that it has been completed (if it is a fixed price project or offer) you can confirm payment which includes releasing funds in Escrow.

Always pay through PeoplePerHour

Paying outside of PPH leaves you unprotected. PPH cannot provide any assistance for projects where any payment has been completed outside of PPH, against our terms and conditions.

Selling Safely

Dream project or too good to be true?

Is the pay amazing and you have to do very little in return? As attractive as it may seem to be wary of such dream projects, particularly if you haven’t worked with the Buyer before. If you have any doubts then as hard as it can be, it’s often safer to steer clear. Also be cautious of any Buyer requesting free samples of work or suggesting free trials with promises of larger work; if the samples in your portfolio aren’t sufficient then make sure to always send samples via the WorkStream with suitable watermarks or in low resolution (if applicable).

Ensure sufficient funds in Escrow before work begins

To protect Buyers and Freelancer alike, we provide an Escrow system where a Buyer can deposit funds at the start of a project so that the Freelancer has the confidence to start work but also so that the Buyer does not have to risk paying any money upfront. Freelancers are encouraged to always ensure that there are funds in Escrow before starting any work, or at least before handing over deliverables, and to think carefully about the Escrow deposit amounts you request in your Proposals, particularly for new Buyers.

Keep communications in the WorkStream

The WorkStream is a tool to keep track of all communications connected with a particular project including any key agreements such as deliverables and timescales. If there is any confusion it is also an important record to refer back to, and in the unlikely event that you need PPH support to resolve a Dispute, the WorkStream is used as the sole indisputable evidence to determine a fair outcome.

Always get paid through PeoplePerHour

When you have completed work arrange for payment by the Buyer (including releasing funds held in Escrow) by raising an invoice in the WorkStream. Paying outside of PPH leaves you unprotected. PPH cannot provide any assistance for projects where any payment has been completed outside of PPH, against our terms and conditions.

Avoid exchanging personal details

Avoid exchanging personal contact details as much as possible, particularly before a Proposal has been accepted or an Offer has been purchased and funds paid into the Escrow account. Never share your bank details, forms of identity nor address details with anyone you “meet” online whether on PPH or elsewhere. Remember you can communicate fully in the WorkStream including exchanging files and even share samples of your work via your Portfolio, and all payment must be conducted safely through PPH without the need to exchange personal information such as bank details.

Our Customer Support Team are on hand to provide you with advice if you are unsure about anything and also to take fast action on any rogue individuals threatening the safety of the community. Alternatively, you can quickly report problems to us by using the "Report" flag you will find on every listing, message and member profile page.

How do I report a profile to PeoplePerHour?

If you have come across any profile, offer or project that you believe is a scam or have experienced issues with messages and communication within a workstream, it is encouraged to report this to PeoplePerHour.

To report a profile, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you are logged into your PeoplePerHour account.
  2. Head to the profile you wish to report and click Report this Profile. This can can be found under the "Insights" section of the user's profile.
  3. Fill in the relavent details in the report form that pops up.
  4. This will then generate a report to our moderation team who review reports on a daily basis.

Rules of Engagement

PPH is a marketplace for quality services. So that both parties know what is expected of them and to ensure a successful experience, we've defined the key rules both Freelancers and Buyers are expected to adhere to when working together.

These rules form part of the PPH T&Cs. Bad Freelancers and Buyers harm the PPH community. If you are working with a Buyer or freelancer that is not sticking to these rules then please report them so that we can provide assistance.

Here are the Rules of Engagement for Project delivery:

Opening Hours & Contacting Customer Support

To contact the Customer Support team please kindly create a support ticket which you can do from https://support.peopleperhour.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Please ensure that when you contact the team to include the email that is linked to your PeoplePerHour account and provide as much detail as possible. Please allow up to 7 working days for the team to respond to your query. Please be advised that due to how our internal system works, support tickets are sorted by the date of a customer's last reply. This means that if you were to submit more than one ticket, you will likely experience delays.

Our Customer Support team's opening hours are between 8 AM - 4 PM UK Time, Monday to Friday.

Please be aware that during National Bank Holidays (UK), responses may take longer than usual and there may be delays.

Please note that the support team does not operate over the weekend and therefore, is likely that your query won't get picked up until next week at the earliest.

I am experiencing technical difficulties, which web browser should I use?

We don't like technical glitches here at PeoplePerHour but occasionally they do happen. PPH is designed to work with the most recent versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer but we recommend using Google Chrome and find that most users don't experience any issues.

Update your web browser to the latest version. PeoplePerHour is built using the latest modern web technologies, which makes PPH safe, quick and powerful but this does mean that users with older web browsers can see odd things happening. Please check that your browser is up-to-date and if you are still experiencing difficulties then contact us.

On-site Listings

As a Buyer, you have the option to browse freelancers based on your location if you want them to proceed with an on-site project. Selecting “ON-SITE” will filter for freelancers that are near your deduced location and are willing to undertake on-site work. Also, in this case, the location information is replaced with the approximate distance of the freelancer from your location.

In order to search more accurately, you can enter a specific zip code or postcode of your country to search near that location. By clicking on Location > On-site, you have the option to select your freelancer based on your nearest location.

Posting a project

If you have specific requirements for a piece of work that you need to be completed by a professional and you want to receive proposals from talented freelancers then you can post the details in a project. It's completely FREE to Post a Project.

How to post a project:

  1. Click on the "Post project" button you will find in the top navigation bar on the site
  2. Complete the details about your project in the form. Here are some tips for completing each field:

  3. What do you need to get done? Give a good and brief summary of what the project is, ideally making it clear the actual skill set you need. This information will be displayed in the project listings so you want to make sure it stands out and attracts the best freelancers with the skills you need.

  4. Pick a category. Choose the category that most closely relates to your project so that it can easily be found.
  5. Subcategory. The subcategory is linked with the category you will add for your project.
  6. Description. This part is key, to get lots of good and realistic proposals, and minimize the number of questions you receive, the more detail that you can provide to freelancers here about exactly what it is you need, timescales. The more details, the better! See it as a project briefing document.
  7. Indicative budget. Freelancers have their own rates so they don't want to waste your time if their rates are far from what you are prepared to spend. Make sure you set a realistic indication and be aware of just setting a very low budget, you will find that the best freelancers won't send you proposals and the old adage is often true: you get what you pay for.
  8. Where does the freelancer need to work from? Here you can specify if the project requires onsite work, or if you are happy to work with freelancers remotely if so you can even specify from which countries.
  9. Experience Level When Buyers post their projects they now need to select one of the 3 levels of experience and rates of the freelancers they want to get Proposals from. This allows the Buyer to get the kind of Proposals they are after and freelancers to choose where to bid. There is no bidding restriction for a freelancer in place.

What happens next?

Once posted, your project undergoes some automated checks to make sure that it meets PeoplePerHour policies before being promoted to all freelancers in the project listings and in email notifications. You should very quickly start to receive proposals from freelancers, you will receive an email notification so that you can log in to your PPH inbox, view their proposals and hopefully find your ideal freelancer!

Project posting policies

When posting a project we have just a few policies that Buyers are expected to adhere to. These policies are designed to make sure that the PeoplePerHour marketplace works well for everyone. These policies form part of our terms and conditions. Projects that break these policies will be removed and we will always contact you to explain why so that corrections can be made.

Prohibited projects: All kinds of work can be posted as a project on PeoplePerHour. There are just a few things that aren’t accepted:

Tips when Posting a Project:

Project Deposits and minimum Proposal amounts

When submitting a Project proposal, the Freelancer must specify the required deposit to be paid. The deposit is the amount to be paid into escrow by the Buyer before work is carried out. For fixed priced Projects we recommend setting a deposit at 100% the proposal value for small projects and 50% for bigger projects. For Projects with Hourly rates, the minimum deposit depends on the size of the job (number of hours to work).

We require Freelancers to submit a minimum proposal value at 80% the job budget indicated by the Buyer. This is to keep the quality of bids in line with the expectation of the buyer.

Fixed price Projects:

Proposal amount Recommended deposit Minimum deposit
£0-40 100% 100%
£40+ 50% 30%

Note: same bands apply regardless of currency (i.e. if proposal is less than £40, $40 or €40, the minimum deposit is 100%)

Projects with hourly rates:

Minimum deposits are dependant on the minimum number of hours needed (selected by the Freelancer when posting the Project and only used for Projects with an Hourly rate).

No. of hours Recommended deposit Minimum deposit
1-4 100% 100%
5-10 75% 50%
10+ 50% 25%

Pre-Funded projects

After a project post, the Buyer can place a deposit for the project. If they do the project will be marked as PRE-FUNDED which reassures freelancers that they are serious about awarding the project. Therefore the project will get better Proposals from more freelancers. Also, Auto-Assign projects were removed from the site because it was not an option many of you used.

Interview Questions

From a buyers perspective the Interview Questions work just like a real-life interview - they are a chance for you to get to know your prospective Freelancers better, and a chance for you to see how well you will get along. There are some standard questions you can set as well as the chance to write custom questions.

From a Freelancers perspective, the Interview Questions are a chance for the Buyer to get to know you better, and a chance for you to sell yourself even more in your proposal.

Why does my project need editing?

If you have received a notification that the project you have posted needs editing then you should have also received an email to the default email address for your PPH account explaining what needs changing (check your spam folder in case it was sent there).

If you can't find the details then check these things in your project as the most likely causes:

How do I edit my Project to get it re-posted?

  1. You will need to locate the project you wish to edit in your Buyer Activity tab.
  2. When you click on the job, it will bring up the description and in the top right hand corner of the screen there will be the option to edit.
  3. Select "Edit"
  4. Make changes to your project to meet all of the points above (of if you are sure that everything is already ok then move to the next step)
  5. Select "Update project"

Your project will then be re-checked and should be posted live on the site quite quickly, after our moderators have checked it over.

Why has my project been declined?

All kinds of projects can be posted on PeoplePerHour, however, there are just a few types of projects that PPH is not suitable for. If your project has been declined then you should have also received an email from us to the default email address on your PeoplePerHour account explaining why (check your spam folder in case it was sent there).

If for some reason you haven't received the email then take a look at the Projects posting policies which explains the types of projects that can't be posted on PPH.

If you believe your project does meet these policies then simply post your project again and we will take a second look.

Tips for working successfully with Freelancers

When working on a project here is the key advice for both parties to follow to guarantee success:

  1. Rules of Engagement Make sure to read the Rules of Engagement so that you understand the respective minimum expectations for both Buyer and Freelancer.
  2. Set clear expectations upfront Things to make sure are explicitly agreed upfront in the WorkStream include:

  3. Avoid "He said / she said" Keeping track of everything that has been discussed and agreed on a project can be a challenge which is why we have the WorkStream on PPH. Here we strongly encourage you to track everything so that you both have the same record of events and can refer back to it. In the rare cases that a project really goes astray, the information held in the WorkStream is key for PPH to assist you in resolving a Dispute.

  4. Regular checkpoints In addition to the basics covered in the Rules of Engagement around communication, we recommend regular checkpoints to review actual deliverable progress if the job is to run for more than a few days. This avoids either party having any surprises towards the end of the project and realizing that something wasn't understood. For example, if the project is a website build, then arrange for regular demos of functionality built to date.
  5. Feedback & iterations For most projects, it is very common that the work first delivered may have a few things that the Buyer would like amended. In design serv, in particular, it is very rare for even the very best designers to meet the brief spot on the first time. In keeping with the "PPH Rules of Engagement", the minimum is that Freelancers should provide, and be given the chance to provide, at least two iterations on the deliverables if at first, they don't hit the mark. To help the Freelancer succeed, the more detailed the feedback from the Buyer the better.
  6. Scope increases It can be very typical for a larger project to incur some extra unforeseen scope increases if the Buyer's requirements have changed along the way. Scope increases should be explicitly defined in the WorkStream alongside agreeing on the associated increase in cost (if applicable). To avoid any disputes down the line, work on additional scope shouldn't start until the Buyer has explicitly agreed (in the WorkStream) to any extra cost.

Selecting a Freelancer

At PeoplePerHour we understand the importance of establishing a healthy relationship with your Buyer or Freelancer.

Freelancers

In order to contact your freelancer go to the freelancer's listings page using search for freelancers at the top of our header. Browse or search and click through to see the profile of a Freelancer. You want to contact a Freelancer about a new Job you can easily do this via the contact button on the profile page of the Freelancer. You are redirected to the contact page where you specify the title of the Job and a small description. It is recommended to turn the contact into a public Job posting at the same time so that you get more quotes. Click send and a new WorkStream between you and the Freelancer is created.

Offers

While searching for offers you have the option to contact a freelancer under our offers page! If you need any clarification about an offer that the Freelancer has posted, simply click the contact button from the relevant offer.

Approving a proposal

At Peopleperhour we want to make sure you work with the best Freelancers and be satisfied with the requested project. But how can you find the freelancer that best fits your requirements?

Evaluating a Proposal

There is no perfect Proposal. However, we recommend you look for the following things when evaluating a Proposal:

  1. Is there enough detail in the Proposal? Always question things that look vague to make sure you fully understand what they are offering.
  2. Are the deliverables itemized and broken down into well-defined targets or milestones?
  3. Have they indicated or committed to any timescales? Do the timescales seem realistic?

Evaluating a Freelancer

  1. Take a look at their profile to see what jobs they have completed on PPH, and the feedback reviews they received.
  2. Check out their portfolio, under their profile page, to see examples of their work. If there aren't enough examples in there then ask them to add more (or send you more examples as attachments in the WorkStream) if relevant, check they have the right training or credentials that you need.
  3. If you are hiring for a creative service then check that they understand the style that you are after, and ideally can share examples in their portfolio where they have done something similar before. When it comes to taste, it's important to make sure that they are on the same page as you.

Highlighted Proposals

We highlight the 'highest quality' proposals that a buyer receives, making the process of reading proposals easier for our buyers.

Incoming proposals are separated into:

How do I know that my money is secure?

Once you accept a Proposal for a Project that you posted or bought an Offer, you will be required to make a payment. This payment does not get released to the freelancer until the agreed Milestones have been met or the work is completed to your specifications. The money is a down-payment held as security in an Escrow account until you release the funds.

If the work is not delivered or is not to your standard, you can reject the invoice. PeoplePerHour has an impartial and independent Meditation policy for Disputes (please bear in mind that you have 7 days to raise a dispute once an invoice has been raised otherwise the funds will be released automatically).

We encourage the two parties to resolve it between themselves and if no solution is found the money may be returned to the buyer unless the work has been proven to be delivered or hours have been approved by the Buyer in which cases payment may be released to the freelancer.

NDA (Non-Disclosure-Agreement)

Our buyers have the option to purchase an NDA Add-on when they Post a project.

Buyers who purchase the NDA Add-on will require freelancers to accept the terms of the agreement before they can submit a proposal for a Job. Buyers can easily purchase the NDA Add-on through either one of the following options:

  1. By selecting the "NDA" option from the list of upgrades on a Project.
  2. or By requesting an NDA via an ongoing Workstream.

After purchasing the NDA for a specific project, buyers will then be able to send an NDA request to every Freelancer they choose for that particular project at no extra cost.

The NDA agreement covers each project separately. So, every time you post a project and you want to be covered by an NDA you'll need to purchase it again.

Unresponsive Freelancer

At PeoplePerHour we strongly encourage buyers and freelancers to work closely together via the WorkStream to ensure that at every step of the way both parties keep communicating well and are happy with how the work is progressing.

Our "PPH Rules of Engagement" outline what is to be expected when working with Freelancers. All Freelancers on PPH provides regular progress updates via the WorkStream and responds to questions from you, the Buyer, within one (1) working day. Sometimes there is simply a good reason why a Freelancer has not responded, such as due to illness. Don't worry, your money will remain safe in Escrow until you choose to release it to the Freelancer.

  1. Get in touch on the WorkStream If you haven't already, get in touch with your Freelancer by posting a message on the WorkStream and ask why they are not responding and how the project is progressing. Make it clear to them that you need more regular updates.
  2. Cancel the job and find another freelancer If they are still not keeping in touch and you aren't happy then you may want to cancel the work with them and find another freelancer to get the job done. To cancel let the freelancer know by posting a message to them in the WorkStream to ask them to stop work.
  3. Request a refund If the agreed delivery date has passed and you haven't received the work from your Freelancer then you may want to request a refund. Freelancers get penalised on PeoplePerHour for jobs refunded because they haven't delivered (or haven't been responsive).

Cancelling a project

The process of cancelling a Project depends on whether the Project was already started or not

Cancelling a project which is still open for proposals

If you no longer want to receive proposals for your project you have two options:

To pause or cancel a project that you have posted simply follow these steps:

  1. Click on your Project > Pause.
  2. This will take you to the list of all the projects that you have posted on PeoplePerHour.
  3. On the right-hand side of the project you would like to pause or cancel, hover over the row to reveal a menu box with available actions.
  4. Click on the downward arrow. Select "Pause" if you would like to temporarily stop receiving proposals or "Cancel" if you would like to permanently cancel your project listing and notify all freelancers who have sent you proposals already.

Cancelling a project which was started already

Most of the time projects progress smoothly and as expected but we understand that occasionally circumstances can change and it may be necessary to cancel a project.

After accepting a proposal, you may request a cancellation but please ensure that you notify the Freelancer of the cancellation by placing a message in the corresponding WorkStream.

If there are funds in the escrow account and you believe you are entitled to a refund, you can request a refund. This typically applies when the freelancer has not responded to a question in the WorkStream within 1 working day or the freelancer has not completed work within the agreed timescale. In this case, you can notify the freelancer of the cancellation by requesting a refund using the “Request Refund” action on the WorkStream.

If you (the Buyer) fails to notify the Freelancer in the WorkStream that you wish to cancel the project and the project is subsequently completed, you must pay for the service delivered. You should agree with the Freelancer in the WorkStream what payment is necessary for any work completed (or time spent, if it is a per-hour project).

If you are canceling because the agreed work has not been delivered by the Freelancer and therefore you believe that you are entitled to a refund of the money held in the Escrow account you can request a refund by selecting the "Request refund" button in the WorkStream. After a refund request, we will contact the buyer and freelancers so both get an opportunity to clarify and justify the situations and their actions. Refunds will be processed within one working day once our Payment Team has taken the time to review them.

Refunds

Am I entitled to a refund?

If you aren't happy with the progress of a project then first raise your concerns with your Freelancer on your WorkStream. Most Freelancers on PPH care a lot about delivering a great service to their Buyers not only so that they can get paid and earn great feedback but also because they want to earn follow-on work with their happy Buyers.

The rule of thumb on PeoplePerHour is that you pay for project; if the project that was agreed (either as part of the proposal acceptance processor as defined in the Offer description) has not been delivered within the agreed timescales, then you don't need to pay and you are entitled to receive a refund of any money held in the Escrow account for the project.

A few things to bear in mind:

How can I request a refund?

To raise your refund request, please click on the option "Request Refund". It is right above the box where you type your messages to the freelancer under your mutual workstream.

Undoing Refund Request

The workstream locks upon submission of a refund request and you're not able to go back and amend. You'd need to get in touch with the support team.

Paying invoices

When the Freelancer has finished the Project, they will raise an invoice to you for payment. This invoice will appear in your WorkStream and you will also receive an email notification. If there is money in Escrow, paying this invoice will involve confirming the release of those funds to the Freelancer.

If the Escrow funds are not sufficient to cover the invoiced amount then you will be asked to also complete the payment with the payment method of your choice for the remaining amount.

If the Freelancer has mistakenly raised the invoice for the incorrect amount, or if the job has not been completely finished, then you can reject the invoice by using the drop-down menu on the invoice in the WorkStream and let the Freelancer know why.

Remember:

Unfortunately, if you have mistakenly paid money out to the Freelancer before the work has finished, or if you are no longer happy with the work that was delivered you will not be able to follow the standard steps to request a refund because the funds are no longer held in Escrow by PeoplePerHour. However, we recommend that you contact your Freelancer on the WorkStream to explain why you are seeking a refund. In many cases, Freelancers will look to work with you to resolve the issues and may even agree to a refund if they can't.

Only pay your Freelancers invoice and release funds from Escrow when you are happy that the project is completed to the buyer's satisfaction. How do I know when a Project is considered "completed"?

Pending invoices

When a Buyer pays an invoice it undergoes some automated security checks from our Payment team. During this time the invoice status will show as "Pending".

In the majority of cases this processing takes just minutes or at peaks times a few hours, however, in this case, extra security checks are needed it may take up to 3 working days.

If a invoice is Pending and it has been less than 3 working days (i.e. excluding Saturdays, Sundays and UK public holidays) since the Buyer paid your invoice, then simply check back again later and you should find that the funds have been released to the Freelancers PPH wallet.

I have received an invoice but I am not happy with the work provided

If you have received an invoice from your freelancer but the work has not been finished then reject the invoice from the WorkStream (see the drop-down arrow on the invoice) and let your freelancer know why you have rejected it so that they can get the project finished. As part of the "PPH Rules of Engagement", payment is only made once a project has been finished including the freelancer providing at least two iterations on the deliverables if you are not 100% satisfied at first. Most freelancers on PPH will go out of their way to make sure that their Buyers are happy with the work delivered so just let them know what is missing.

If you are not happy to continue working with the freelancer then take a look at the refund policy to see whether you may be entitled to a refund of any money held in Escrow.
If the work has been delivered and the freelancer has tried to make you 100% satisfied but the deliverables don't fully meet your taste (for example a logo design is not exactly what you had in mind) then you will not be entitled to a refund but you can indicate your opinion on their service by leaving feedback when you have paid their invoice.

I am not happy with the work delivered but you released my money, what can I do?

When you agree to work with freelancers on PeoplePerHour your money is protected in Escrow until you are happy that the work has been delivered. You confirm payment to the freelancer when you receive their invoice. Equally, if you are not happy with the work delivered you can reject the freelancer's invoice and let them know what needs finishing before you are happy to pay.

All invoices should be paid within 7 days.. If you don't take action on a freelancer's invoice within this timeframe then some automatic actions will be taken so that the freelancer does not go unpaid for work delivered, as follows:

  1. Invoice Reminders After the initial email notification of an invoice from your freelancer, you will automatically receive at least one further email reminder (for Offers) or multiple email reminders (for larger custom projects) to take action on the invoice (pay, or reject), if you haven't already.
  2. Automatic release of money in Escrow (and your PPH account) If after these reminders the invoice remains unpaid, and you have not rejected it, then the money held in the Escrow account up to the invoiced amount will be automatically released to the freelancer as payment. If there is not sufficient money held in the Escrow account then funds from your PPH wallet to cover any missing amounts will also be released to the freelancer. For Offers, which are express Projects delivered in just a few days, this automatic payment will happen 7 days after the invoice has been raised; for larger custom projects buyers are given a longer grace period of 30 days before the money is automatically released as payment.
  3. What to do if you are not happy with the work delivered If you have not acted on the invoice and reminders and find that your money has therefore been released automatically to the freelancer before you are happy with the work delivered then: Get in touch with the freelancer on the WorkStream to let them know what work you feel is outstanding. Most freelancers will happily make further amendments even after they have received payment; they want to keep you happy and hopefully, agree with your follow-on work. Plus they want to get the all-important good feedback from you.

I already put a deposit into escrow why am I being asked again?

We always encourage freelancers to ensure that the escrow is funded at all times. Initially, we recommend that the deposit covers 50% of the Proposal amount. If the project is ongoing and there are not sufficient funds in escrow, it may be appropriate for the freelancer to request further deposits throughout the project. If this is a one-off project and the deposit already covers all or most of the expected final cost then it may be that the freelancer may have made an error. Simply message the freelancer and ask why they have made the request. If it is in error the freelancer can cancel the request.

Leaving feedback

The feedback ratings on PeoplePerHour are an important indicator of the reliability of a user based on their track record under our platform. On a user's profile page you can see the feedback scores they have received on jobs as a freelancer ("My Freelancer Activity") and as a Buyer ("My Buyer Activity").
You will also see their overall feedback rating which is the % of positive (4 and 5 stars) reviews that they have received over the total number of reviews received.

How to leave feedback:

Can I change the feedback I left?

If you have changed your mind about your experience with a freelancer or a buyer after you have left feedback, unfortunately, it can't be changed. You should leave honest feedback that is a true reflection of your experience with the freelancer. Feedback is only left after you have paid your freelancer's invoice for work completed, and you should only pay invoices when you have checked the work delivered. However, if you made a genuine typing error (for example accidentally selected 2 stars when you meant 5!) then we urge you to immediately contact the Customer Support Team.

Withdrawing Money

When you have funds in your PeoplePerHour Account, you can either choose to leave them there for buying additional proposal credits or even buying services yourself, or you can withdraw them to your PayPal, Payoneer or bank account.

To withdraw funds from your wallet, use the Withdraw Funds link you will find in your Payments section.

Your PPH Account has 3 main currencies. GBP, EUR, and USD. Some withdrawal accounts have a specific currency, therefore, make sure you withdraw to the correct currency. For example, if your Payoneer account is USD and you have GBP funds you will have to convert those funds first and then withdraw them.

Withdrawal Request Processing

Upon submitting your withdrawal request, this needs to be processed by PPH. Typically this will occur within the next 2 working days, and it's an important part of the withdrawal process in order to verify that all the required information has been provided, and the necessary security measures have been executed.

Please note that funds will only become available for withdrawal after the clearing period, which can take approximately 14 working days to process.

Upon completion of the Withdrawal Request process, you will get notified via email and through the respective "Transactions" page (under your Payments menu), where detailed information will be provided both in case of Approval or Rejection of your request.

After your request has been processed and approved by PPH, the funds will be on their way to your withdrawal account.

Different withdrawal account types take a different amount of time for the funds to reach your account:

Please note that processing times may be affected by holiday periods.

Here are some of our top tips:

Endorsements

The endorsements feature is a great way to boost your profile by enabling you to get your happy clients from the offline world (or even ex-colleagues or bosses) to recommend you. This feature is particularly useful if you are a new freelancer on PPH that hasn't yet won any work enabling you to add credibility to your profile.

Endorsements is an added way to build reputation on PeoplePerHour. Reach out to your network and ask them for an endorsement. It will push you up the ranks and search results. If you get 5+ endorsements you will get this prominent badge on your profile. You can also work on Zero Service Fee with all your endorsers!

Endorsements will not affect your feedback rating but they will help you win more work by:

  1. Offering an important source of additional information for potential Buyers reviewing your profile.
  2. Making your profile stand out more to Buyers in the search results because the number of endorsements you have will be displayed.
  3. More endorsements mean you will appear in the "Top Endorsers" rankings and gain a Top Endorsed badge for your profile if you have 5 or more endorsements.

  2. Go to the Dashboard
  3. Select the "Boost my Cert" option under CERT and then you will see the option to "Get Endorsed".
  4. Then click on Get Endorsed Type a short message to be seen by your previous clients, asking them to recommend and endorse work you have already done. Click Send Requestand an email will be sent directly to all those you have asked for an endorsement.

Freelancer Profile policies

Your profile is your “shop front” as a Freelancer so it is recommended that you invest the time to include as much information as you can to highlight your skills and credentials. When creating your profile we have a few policies that Freelancers are expected to adhere to. These policies form part of our T&Cs.

Prohibited profiles: All profiles are allowed on PeoplePerHour except for the ones that advertise the following services:

Tips on how to have a quality freelancer profile

Fill out your profile as much as possible, and really focus on your headline and the first three lines, as this is what will show above the read more tag on your profile.

We suggest checking out other freelancer profiles who share the same skill set as you for some ideas! If buyers are not approaching you with offers, try and consider reaching out to potential buyers with proposals - we provide 15 free proposal credits per month.

As part of your freelancer profile, make sure you have a decent picture. We really encourage personal headshots rather than company logos or cartoon-style figures.

Buyers like to get an idea of who their freelancer is, so use your headshot to your advantage in your freelancer profile. We also encourage professional profile pictures. So, if you were planning on using the one of you swigging a beer on a beach in Spain, we’d urge you to reconsider!

Upload your best work to your portfolio

Your freelance portfolio is your biggest sales tool — it shows your potential new customers what you’ve done before, and the quality of work you could do for them. If you want to quickly land your first client, load your very best pieces of work to your freelance portfolio, with your best six pieces first. (These are the ones that will be shown first on your profile.) The good news is, you can add as many pieces to your portfolio as you like!

But, we also know that new freelancers might not yet have a freelance portfolio to show off. If this is case for you, don’t panic! Even as a brand new freelancer who’s just starting on the journey to living your work dream, you can build a portfolio easily and quickly.

  1. Enter competitions. This is a great way for creative freelancers to show what they’re made of. Search online for relevant competitions in your industry and create a few pieces of work. If you win, bonus! If you don’t, it doesn’t matter. You have something to add to your portfolio.
  2. Do some freelance work for a charity. Here at PeoplePerHour HQ we definitely do not endorse working for free. You’re a professional freelancer and you deserve to be paid! But, for new freelancers, offering to do some free or greatly reduced work for a charity or non-profit that you care about, can be useful to you both. And, you can then use it as part of your freelance portfolio. (Don’t forget to make this a condition of doing the work!)
  3. Offer to do freelance work for friends and family at a reduced rate. Know of a family business that could use your services? Use who and what you know to help you build your portfolio. Working for friends and family for a very limited time can really help to boost your credibility, and your freelancer portfolio.
Add Offers to your freelancer profile

Offers, are just one of the things that set PeoplePerHour apart from some of our competitors.

Offers are ‘off-the-shelf’ jobs that you can complete for different buyers over and over again. For example, if you’re really good at writing blog posts, you can easily create an offer for writing a 500-word SEO-friendly blog post for a set fee. That offer can then be bought by the PeoplePerHour community of buyers.

Offers are brilliant additions to your freelancer profile and act as your very own little shop that you can promote both on and off the platform.

Interesting fact: over the last six months, PeoplePerHour buyers have bought 30602 offers, compared to accepting 28867 public freelancer bids.

Go ahead and create as many offers as you like! This can be a great way to land your first customer.

Apply for projects regularly

As our monthly gift to you, PeoplePerHour will credit your freelancer account with 15 proposal credits at the start of each month, free of charge. All you have to do is use them.

It’s unlikely you’ll gain your first client without bidding on projects. Applying for projects regularly and writing a stellar proposal will help to convince new customers that you’re the right freelancer for the job.

Our guidance on writing a great project freelance proposal:

“Patience is the key to your success. You may get impatient and depressed when not getting jobs immediately but you need a little time to build trust with buyers. Once it is done, you will get a flow of work.”

How do I keep a buyer happy?

Over 40% of projects on PeoplePerHour lead to follow-on work, so other than getting paid on your job and getting the all-important good feedback, you have even more incentive to deliver a great service to your buyers.

Here are some tips on how to keep your buyers happy and returning for more:

  1. Make sure that upfront you understand your buyer requirements fully. Ask questions if anything isn't clear. The more questions, the better!
  2. Keep everything recorded in the WorkStream so that you can refer back to points if either of you forgets what was agreed. Contacting a buyer outside PeoplePerHour, before the approval of a Proposal, is strictly against our T&C's.
  3. As work progresses, keep your buyer updated and reassured on your progress by posting regular updates in the WorkStream. There's no such thing as over communication when it comes to keeping buyers happy. In almost 90% of cases that go astray, they do so because of poor communication and wrong instruction were given.
  4. If you can, share samples of the work at each stage so that the buyer can confirm it is what they are looking for; so that you don't find yourself having to do a lot of rework at the end.
  5. Flag any issues quickly to your buyer so that they can be sorted out before they become a real problem. A buyer would rather know that there is a 'block' when it happens, not six weeks after the deadline.
  6. If your buyer raises any concern, address them as quickly as possible and assure them that you are keen to deliver their requirements. Work with them to find a good resolution, not a disagreement.
  7. Deliver on time! If something unexpected happens and you are not able to meet the deadlines you agreed then make sure you flag that to your buyer as soon as you possibly can. And go out of your way to get the job delivered quickly.
  8. Offer revisions: if at first, they are not happy with some of the deliverables ask your buyer for detailed feedback so that you can address each point. Make sure to offer your buyer at least two iterations on the work.

Verify your Account

We urge our Freelancers to verify their accounts with us whilst using their real profile picture as well as their real information.

Our Payment Team is here to assure that all of our users are verified under our platform and that there is no bypassing or any breach of our Terms and Conditions.

We hope you understand that we have the best interests of our customers and KYC compliance regulations in mind when performing these checks.

  1. Once logged in go under your Profile > Settings.
  2. Go under Settings > Payments.
  3. Upload all the requested Identification Documents and click Submit.
  4. Once the documents are uploaded you will be asked if you want the process to be Fast-Tracked (get your documents approved within 24Hrs) or Basic (getting them approved within 7 working days).
  5. Kindly wait for our Payment Team to approve your documents. Be aware that document verification can take up to 7 working days.

How do I know that I will get paid?

PeoplePerHour provides you with several important tools to keep you protected and ensure you get paid:

  1. Escrow First, we have an Escrow facility that allows you to request the funds be put in place before you start working. We advise that, for small jobs or where you have no record working with the Buyer you request either all the funds be put in Escrow or agree to milestones, which have been pre-fund to Escrow (as a deposit) before you start work on each milestone. Please note: you do not need to raise an Invoice for each milestone. All you need is to ensure that the funds are in place by requesting a deposit. It is usually best you complete the Job and Invoice for the whole lot in one go in the end.
  2. Feedback Second: PeoplePerHour operates an online reputation system based on feedback reviews from other users. We advise you look at the Buyer’s profile when deciding if to work with them and how much to request in deposit. We always advise that it’s best to err on the safe side in the beginning by ensuring that you only work to the amount held in Escrow.
  3. Disputes PPH encourage our Freelancers and Buyers to try and resolve any disagreements between themselves. However should that not be possible PPH Customer Services can provide Dispute resolution. Please note: we strongly encourage users to include all agreements and communication on the WorkStream. In the event of having to make a resolution decision, PPH will use only the communication in the WorkStream as sole evidence.

How do Freelancers get paid?

These are the steps to Getting paid on PeoplePerHour:

  1. When you, the Freelancer, has completed the work on the Project or Offer as agreed with your Buyer, you raise an Invoice in the WorkStream.
  2. Your invoice will be sent to the Buyer for payment, which includes them releasing any money held in Escrow up to the invoiced amount. The PPH system reminds Buyers to pay invoices raised to them within the 7 days payment terms on PeoplePerHour.
  3. Once the invoice is paid by the Buyer, the payment to your PeoplePerHour User Account will be processed and undergo some security checks. The status of your invoice will appear as pending when it has been paid by your Buyer and is being processed by PPH. Typically, this processing takes a matter of hours or even minutes, but it can occasionally take up to 3 working days.
  4. Once the funds have been released to your PeoplePerHour User Account, you can either spend the money directly on the site (for example, to purchase services yourself or to buy more proposal credits) or you can choose to withdraw them to your preferred withdrawal method, which can be to your bank account, to your PayPal account or Payoneer account.

Please note that funds will only become available for withdrawal after the clearing period, which can take approximately 14 working days to process. Please also be aware that National Bank Holidays may also have an impact on processing times.

Raising invoices

Once you have completed the agreed work on the project or offer to receive payment you just need to raise an invoice to ask the Buyer to release the deposit funds from Escrow and pay any remaining balance.

  1. Go to the WorkStream with that Buyer.
  2. At the bottom, click Raise Invoice.
  3. Fill out the invoice form and click Send.

Your invoice will appear on the WorkStream and your Buyer will be notified by email. Your Buyer is asked to pay your invoice within 7 days.

A couple of points to note:

How can I change Invoice Details?

I'm afraid there isn't a way to change an invoice once it is raised. If the invoice hasn't been paid yet, you can cancel and reissue a new one. If it has been paid however, there is no way to change it.

My Buyer has rejected my invoice, what should I do?

If your Buyer has rejected your invoice then get in touch with them on the WorkStream to find out why and see what you can do to resolve the issue. Most problems are fixed with timely communications. If they are not happy with the work that has been delivered ask for their detailed feedback so that you can meet their needs.

Remember as per the "PPH Rules of Engagement":

If you have delivered the work that was agreed in your proposal for a custom project or in your Offer description, to a good quality standard (it is error-free, etc), provided at least two iterations of the deliverables, and the Buyer is still refusing to pay then you can raise a Dispute to PPH for assistance in your WorkStream.

My Buyer hasn't paid the invoice and I wasn't covered by Escrow, what can I do?

The majority of Buyers on PPH are serious about their jobs and paying promptly for the work delivered. However, if you have completed a job, raised your invoice and you haven't received payment from your Buyer within 7 days PPH will chase this payment for you including automatically releasing money held in Escrow and if necessary suspending the Buyer's account until they pay any missing sums.

Unfortunately, if there is insufficient money held in the Escrow account there are no guarantees that PPH will be able to recover the full payment for you, although we will do our very best.

Tips to avoid payment issues:

How to raise a Withdrawal request

To complete a withdrawal request go to Actions >> View Earnings on your profile.

To withdraw your money, you will need to go through a clearing period that lasts approximately 2 weeks, depending on your profile. You will also be able to see your current clearing period on the View Earnings Page, under the Control Panel section.

Where can I see my withdrawals?

As a Freelancer, your pending withdrawals can be viewed under your Transactions tab: Payments > Transactions > Funds Withdrawn. This gives you a full list of all your transactions with PPH.

How do I add a withdrawal method?

To add a withdrawal method to your PeoplePerHour account, simply:

  1. Click on your profile photo in the top right corner.
  2. From the dropdown menu, click on Settings and then go to the Payments tab.
  3. From there, you can add a Paypal, Payoneer, Bank or ACH Bank (USA only) account to withdraw your funds to.

To link your payment account, both your payment account and PeoplePerHour account must be under the same name. If the name differs, you must change your PeoplePerHour account to match your payment account or vice versa.

How long does it take for my withdrawal to be approved?

As a rapidly growing business, we have to follow stricter regulations and complete more checks before we can release payments that are made through our platform in order to protect our users. We can assure you that our processes, terms and conditions, and actions, all comply with current law.

The length of your clearing period will be determined by how much you have earned on PeoplePerHour in the previous two calendar months. This ranges from 3 days to 14 days. Following the clearing period, all withdrawal requests will be processed by the PeoplePerHour team within 2 working days.

You will be able to see your current clearing period on your profile. Head to Actions >> View Earnings and go to Control Panel.

I am not happy with the feedback I have received, what can I do?

The feedback system on PPH is to enable Buyers and Freelancers the chance to leave honest feedback about their experience. The feedback rating and comments given is an individual's personal opinion and therefore it may be quite subjective and you may not always agree with it.

If you are not happy with the feedback the Buyer gave:

  1. Respond to the feedback comments to explain your side if you feel any points are unfair or one-sided. But take care to not "mud sling", it won't necessarily put you in a good light for others reading the comments.
Just present a response to the key points raised in a reasonable way.
  2. Take the points on board, and learn from it for the next project you work on to avoid the same problems again.
The more successfully you deliver further projects, the less impact one bad rating will have on your rankings.
  3. If the feedback has been left dishonestly or out of spite or is in breach of PPH terms and conditions in any other way then report it to PPH Customer Support. If we agree with you, we will remove the contentious comments however the rating will remain.

Freelancer Quality - CERT

PPH is a marketplace for professional freelance services, where consistent, top quality and reliable Freelancers are rewarded with greater visibility and opportunities for success. The standard on PPH that defines a top quality Freelancer is represented by the acronym CERT. CERT is our official ranking algorithm. Think of it as a shiny TripAdvisor badge or a special qualification showing potential buyers that you are trustworthy, experienced and professional.

What does CERT stand for?

Content, Engagement, Repeat Usage, Trust.

Content

This represents how well Freelancers advertise their services and win work, such as:

Engagement

This represents how successfully Freelancers work on jobs with Buyers, and follow the "PPH Rules of Engagement", including:

Repeat

This represents a Freelancer successfully achieving high levels of follow-on work from loyal Buyers.

Trust

This represents the amount of credibility and reputation Freelancers have built on PeoplePerHour, such as:

CERT FAQ

Why do we use CERT?

We use CERT to reward highly-qualified freelancers so that they get the most exposure to buyers. The higher the quality work you do, the more we reward you and the higher your CERT level.

What do we define as high quality?

There are several factors which we take into account when awarding CERT. This includes:

How are CERT levels broken down?

CERT ranges from 1-5 with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest. 0.5% (around 200) of freelancers will even receive a Top CERT badge which is as good as it gets in terms of CERT. CERT is a continuous process and freelancers receive a badge on their profile which shows buyers which level they are on.

CERT levels:

CERT is a continuous score that works in the background. However, to make it easier for people to understand, we have broken it down into levels. Freelancers get a badge on their profile to reveal their CERT level.

Freelancer Response Time

The response time is displayed automatically by the system and refers to both your workstream reply time and also how swiftly you respond to job invites.

This will update over time and your response time will also get shorter if you are consistently responding to buyer messages and accepting/ rejecting job invites.

The response time in the Freelancer Profile page is calculated with:

response time = (X+A)/(Y+B) (in hours)

Where:

Then:

Response time is calculated only for project invitations and offer streams and it is the time that a freelancer needs to respond the first time. It is not calculated again while the 2 parties communicate inside the streams.

Examples:

  1. Example 1: A buyer creates a project and invites a freelancer. If the freelancer replies then the algorithm calculates the response time, in minutes and store it in the database.
  2. Example 2: A buyer buys an offer. If the freelancer replies then the algorithm calculates the response time, in minutes and stores it in the database.

Freelancer Availability Feature

We have a feature called "Freelancer Availability" with the aim to improve communication between buyers and freelancers, reduce conflicts and increase freelancer response rate.

Freelancers are able to specify if they are available to chat about a new project and start working on it immediately. Buyers can easily filter and contact freelancers that are around and available to start their quick and urgent projects instantly.

Set your availability

It's important for buyers to have an accurate indication of when freelancers can carry out work. Failing to meet the buyer's expectations in terms of availability can lead to lower CERT and even suspension of the freelancer's account. This applies to all Freelancers with approved applications to sell on PeoplePerHour.

There are four important tools that allow freelancers to control when they can start working on a new project or how much work they take on and manage delivery date expectations:

  1. Availability status - Switch accessible from the main menu when logged in. You can use the switch and set your status to either "Available" or "Busy". Beware that if your status is "Available" you should promptly respond to the Buyer’s message and be able to start work immediately after you agree on terms with the Buyer. Available means you are ready and available to start a new project.
  2. Max open orders - Accessible under Settings > Availability when logged in. Automatically pause live Offers when you reach the maximum in-progress (not delivered) amount set by you. When you deliver one or more, your live Offers get automatically resumed.
  3. Working days - Accessible under Settings > Availability when logged in. Set which days of the week you want to regularly work. This is very useful if you only work on PeoplePerHour part-time or aren't prepared to work on weekends. This setting does the following:
  4. Off days - Accessible under Settings > Availability when logged in. Specify the time you take off (e.g. holiday dates). This is similar to working days and does the following:

The Freelancer Application Process

Welcome aboard, you're only 3 steps away from joining our amazing freelancer community on PeoplePerHour!

We hope this guide helps you get to grips with what to expect during the application process and provides you with the information you need to start your freelance journey on the platform. Let’s get started:

Step 1: Verify your email

After you’ve entered your contact details, PeoplePerHour will send you an email to verify your email address. You won’t be able to start the application form until this step is completed so it’s important that you do so to proceed to the next step.

Step 2: The Application Form

Once your email is verified, you’ll be asked to fill out a quick application form and to complete the following details:

Step 3: Submit your application!

You’ll have the option to submit your form by either having it Fast-Tracked (reviewed in 1 working day) at an additional cost or going through the normal review process (reviewed within 7 working days) free of charge.

After you’ve chosen your preferred option and you’re happy with all the information you’ve provided, your application can be submitted! You’ll get an email confirming this immediately after.

The moderation team will then get to work and review your application within the time period you’ve opted for. Once an outcome has been reached, you’ll then be notified via email of the decision.

With this, we hope to welcome you to the platform soon where you can start making bright ideas happen.

Extending your Freelancer Application

New Freelancers initially have a 3 month period (qualifying period) to make just 2 sales or bill an aggregate of £100, receiving average feedback of at least 4 stars in order to retain the full access to Freelancer features. If this is not achieved within the 3 month qualifying period the account will become “limited” as for the freelancer features. This is in order to maintain the highest quality in our Freelancers base.

Freelancers have the option to extend their qualification period :

If you have already completed some sales or billing before the end of the qualifying period, this will be taken into account in the extended period. E.g. if you have 1 sale with good feedback you need just one more or just a few more invoiced transactions.

What if my Freelancer Application got declined?

At PeoplePerHour our daily job is to have a trusted and confident community. We are working to assure that all our freelancers are ready to go beyond and live their work dream and, therefore, we need to follow some approval rules as a company.

Why was my Freelancer Application rejected?

There is a very vigorous moderation process in place to ensure we protect other freelancers on the platform.

All applications are reviewed by our moderation team and there are multiple criteria that must be met in order to join the freelance community on PeoplePerHour.

These criteria include, but are not limited to:

If you believe that your application was denied because of the above reason, we advise that you reapply in 3 months time and ensure that you strengthen your portfolio before doing so.

Please note that we do not offer an appeal process for applications that are rejected.

Qualification Period - accessing Freelancer features

New Freelancers initially have a 3 month period ("qualifying period") to make just 2 sales or bill an aggregate of £100. You must also receive an average feedback of at least 4 stars in order to get full access to the Freelance features on the platform. If you have already made sales and have 5 stars, then you should have access to these features.

Offers

What is an offer?

Offers are small pre-packaged projects that can be delivered for a fixed price within a few days (a maximum of 5 days). In essence, an offer is an ‘express project’, which is a great way to showcase your services and attract new buyers who can try you out on a smaller piece of work. Over 40% of offer sales lead to larger follow-on work!

Posting Offers

Offers aren’t just for "traditional" services such as proofreading or designing logos. You can offer anything you like (within our guidelines!) so if you can teach cake decorating or self-defense why not create an Offer for that!

Offers are "express" jobs delivered within a maximum of 5 days so don't promise you can "Develop a website" or similar!

If your services normally require far longer than 5 days then think about what kind of starter package you can offer. A large percentage of Offer sales go on and lead to much larger custom projects with buyers so it is a great way to acquire new buyers.

How to Post an offer:

Once you post an offer, it is sent to the moderation team to review. This can take up to 1 day to process. This is what is meant when you see "pending" on your profile. Once reviewed, you'll get an email with the outcome!

Offers posting policies

Offers are fixed price services by Freelancers. They are the perfect way to showcase the services a Freelancer can offer in “bitesize” form to attract new Buyers.

When posting an Offer we just have a few policies that Freelancers are expected to adhere. These policies are designed to make sure that the marketplace works well for everyone. Offers that break these policies will be removed and we will always contact the Freelancer to explain why so that corrections can be made.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: There have recently been delays in likes processing from sites like Facebook which may result in delays when these will show on the site. However, these delays must be properly explained and advised by the freelancer and acknowledged by the buyer before work is to initiate as to avoid disputes issues.

Prohibited services All kinds of services can be offered on PPH and therefore offered in an Offer. There are just a few things that can't be offered:

Tips for Posting Offers:

What is the Character limit when posting offers?

There is a limit in the field "PROVIDE A DESCRIPTION FOR YOUR OFFER, OPTIMIZED FOR SEARCH RESULTS" and the characters added need to be more than 120 and less than 150 characters. Please bear in mind that apart from words, spaces between the letters and punctuation count as a characters as well. In the aforementioned section you can provide a short and precise description to make your Offer stand out on search engines results.

If you wish to add a detailed description of what that Offer provides then it needs to be done through this field “PROVIDE MORE DETAILS ABOUT YOUR OFFER” which is the section Buyers can actually see when viewing your post.

How can I ensure my offer stands out from the crowd?

Here are our top tips to create an irresistible offer for buyers:

  1. Analyse your competition Before you start creating your offer, take a look at your competition. Work out what the most successful offers have in common, so you can make sure you also hit these sweet spots. If you find a niche in your area with few offers, it might be worth trying to exploit this skills gap. Top tip: Above all, gain a strong understanding of the key factors that are leading to success for top performing freelancers, and work out how you can improve on this.
  2. Create a clear and concise title When creating your title, it’s important to think about what your buyer will be searching for when trying to find your service. The closer you can get to the search term that most buyers will be using, the more likely your title will stand out as a relevant offer that will meet their needs. Don’t over complicate it by going into too much detail about the different elements of the offer, that’s what the description is for. Top tip: Don’t write whole words in capital letters, as this will make your offer appear unsolicited and unprofessional.
  3. Use an eye-catching, but relevant image Images that freelancers create or use for an offer are displayed in the search results. This allows freelancers to use a relevant image that demonstrates the skills that the buyer can receive. Clearly you want to attract attention to your offer when it appears in the search results. However, it’s important that you are attracting eyes to your offer for the right reasons. An extravagant image may capture buyers’ attention, but it may look unprofessional and therefore, an unattractive offering. Keep it relevant by capturing the key elements of the service you provide, but also make sure it looks professional, as this will help to build trust with the buyer. Please note that re-using images across multiple offers is not supported. This helps to keep images relevant and to prevent plagiarism. Top tip: Keep it simple and professional.
  4. Be clear on your pricing It’s important to be as clear as possible on what is included in your initial price, whether that is the number of words you will write, or how many web pages you will create. A common example is a video editing or animation offer that doesn’t state how many seconds / minutes the video will be. Lack of clarity on deliverables is one of the most common reasons for offers on our platform being disapproved. Top tip: Remember, you can use the add-ons feature to make it clear how much extra work will cost if the buyer requires this.
  5. Outline what makes you different in your description Ok, so you’ve been clear and concise to describe your offering in the title. You’ve created a professional and eye-catching image to draw the buyer to your offer, and you’ve clearly stated what is included for the price. Now it’s time to really explain why your service is different to the other freelancers that are offering something similar. Use your description to explain simply and easily the benefits you offer the buyer, and how you will achieve this. With a killer description, you can seal the deal for the sale, all that’s left is to deliver on your promises! Top tip: Always proofread your copy, any grammatical mistakes will devalue your authority on the service you want to provide.

There it is, our top 5 tips to ensure your offer attracts many sales.

Offers Add-ons

Offer add-ons are a great way for Freelancers to enhance their Offer listings and a super-easy way for Buyers to select additional services as part of the same Offer package.

Add-ons are related, optional, extra services that form part of an Offer listing. These are provided by the same Freelancer who created the Offer and they allow Freelancers to offer relevant services in addition to their main Offer offering as part of the same package.

For example, a logo design Offer could offer the following add-on services:

The core Offer remains unchanged but the Buyer is free to select the additional services at the point of sale. This is done from the main Offer listing page and the price is automatically recalculated.

Priority Delivery Offer Add-on

In addition to custom add-ons, the Freelancer can add the option for priority delivery. For a pre-determined price, the Freelancer is committed to prioritize this service and deliver all the work including the selected add-ons by the specified time. The priority delivery fee is set by the Freelancer.

Featured Offers is an additional, optional way by which Freelancers can make their Offers stand out to prospective Buyers. For a small fee, Featured Offers will have higher visibility across the site for 7 days.

Benefits:

  1. When you feature your Offer, it will appear at the top of the default Offer listings page that all Buyers first come to.
  2. Your Offer will also get a boost in the listings in your category and when a Buyer performs a keyword search, if your Offer is one of the most relevant Featured Offers for that search term.
  3. Get more exposure Featuring an Offer improves your chances of being promoted across the PeoplePerHour homepage and included our periodic Offer newsletters. The Offers displayed in these promotion slots are selected from the very best Offers, and the Featured Offers are checked first. Featuring your Offer doesn't guarantee it will be promoted in these parts of PPH however it does increase your chances.

How-to feature your Offer

If you already have an Offer on the site you can feature it from the Offers section of your 'My Freelancer activity' page.

Alternatively, you can feature a new Offer as follows:

When you feature your Offer you have the following renewal options to automatically re-feature your Offer:

Note, if you choose to re-feature your Offer again before the 7 day feature period has expired the 7 day feature period starts again, it is not added on to the end of the original feature period.

Why has my Offer been declined?

All kinds of services can be offered on PPH, however, there are just a few services that are not suitable for the PPH marketplace. If your Offer has been declined altogether then you should have received an email to the default email address on your PPH account explaining why (always checks your spam folder). If you believe your Offer does meet these policies, or if you can offer another service that is accepted on PPH, then post another Offer and we will take another look.

How can I cancel an offer?

Offers are fixed-price jobs posted by Freelancers. To cancel an offer on your profile, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Offers page in your profile
  2. Select the Offer you wish to cancel
  3. On the right-hand side, you will see 4 options
  4. Choose the Cancel option

Editing an Offer

If you have received a notification that your offer needs editing you should have also received an email to the default email address for your PeoplePerHour account, explaining why (always check your spam folder).

You will need to locate the offer you wish to edit in your Freelance Activity tab.

If you are unsure what needs changing then check that your Offer meets the following points:

How do I get my Offer re-posted?

  1. Select "Edit"
  2. Make the changes to your Offer so that it meets all of the above points.
  3. Select "Update Offer"

Your Offer will then be rechecked and hopefully posted on the site very quickly.

You can Feature your Profile

For our Freelancers there is a website feature available to help you promote your Profile, expand your customer base and drive your sales to the next level! You can feature your Profile and appear in the first 3 slots in https://www.peopleperhour.com/freelance for each one of your skills.

How to feature your profile:

  1. You place a bid with the highest daily amount you are willing to spend to promote your Profile as Featured as well as your preferred number of days, as shown below.
  2. Every day we select the 3 profiles per skill with the highest bid and make them Featured. These profiles will be pinned on top of Freelancer Listings for each skill and will get a special ribbon.
  3. You will also receive some useful information through email like what the average successful bids were for skills for which you didn’t make it to the top 3 as well as how many more clicks your Featured Profile has received compared to the past.

Featured Profiles is a great way for you to gain more visibility and boost your sales. They can be used by pretty much anyone – from seasoned Freelancers to those aiming to their first few sales to be qualified.

Submitting Proposals

It’s important that you spend time putting together a good Proposal. It doesn't have to belong, but it needs to fully address the needs of the buyer. Begin by identifying the key specifics of the project:

  1. Deliverables
  2. Time frame
  3. Skills required

Here are some other top tips!

Updating the agreed payment amount after a proposal has been accepted

If the proposal has been accepted, there is unfortunately no way to amend it.

What we suggest doing, in this case, is to clearly document the amended agreement in the workstream that's between yourself and your Buyer. Then make it clear that both parties agree to the changes in price for the work.

Then you can either ask your Buyer for the deposit for the extra funds if you want to have the full amount in escrow or you can invoice directly for the agreed amount of work once completed.

Canceling a proposal

If you have sent a Proposal to a Buyer that they haven't yet accepted and you want to change some details you will need to cancel your original Proposal and then re-send a new Proposal in the WorkStream.

To do this:

  1. Locate your original Proposal in the WorkStream
  2. Select the "Cancel" button on the Proposal itself (if the Proposal has been accepted by the Buyer you will not be able to cancel it, see below)
  3. Find the "New Proposal" button at the bottom of the WorkStream and re-submit a new Proposal.

You do not use extra Proposal credits for new Proposals sent in the same WorkStream.

If your Buyer has accepted your Proposal already you will not be able to directly change or cancel your Proposal. Instead:

How many proposals can I send in a month?

At the beginning of every month all users are given 15 Proposal credits completely free.

How do Proposal credits work?

For every Proposal sent, 1 credit is used up even if the Buyer does not accept your Proposal.

If you cancel a Proposal with a particular Buyer (for example because something is incorrect or you agree a slightly changed scope) and re-submit a new Proposal to the same Buyer in the same WorkStream it will not use up another credit.

Irrespective of how many credits you used up the previous month (whether 0, 1, 15, or anything in between) you will start the next month with an allocation of 15 credits again.

Example of how Proposal credits work:

Note: Previously (before 21/Mar/24) a credit wasn't used if you are the first to submit a Proposal. We removed this feature because some Freelancers were using a bot to snipe the first Proposal with low quality text.

How can I get more proposal credits?

You can always buy more credits than your free allocation by going to your Settings and within the General section clicking "Buy more" in front of the row Proposal Credits. Unlike the free allotment of 15 credits each month, credits that you buy do roll over each month if you don't use them.

Featured Proposals are an optional way to maximize your chance of success on PeoplePerHour. Each time you feature a proposal, this requires a Featured Proposal Credit (in addition to a standard proposal credit).

Benefits:

  1. Buyers will receive your proposal instantly, before others! Buyers receive daily summary emails of the latest proposals they have received. If you feature your proposal, the Buyer will be instantly notified by email. In addition, your proposal will be highlighted to the Buyer in their next proposal summary email.
  2. Featured proposals stand out! Your featured proposal will appear right at the top of the list of proposals in the Buyer's PeoplePerHour inbox and stand out even more with a special ribbon.

In order to feature a proposal, you will need to purchase featured proposals credits under your Settings > General > Featured Proposal Credits.

When submitting a proposal, you can tick the checkbox > Send & Feature. Once you click on Send & Feature you will see the Featured banner under your proposal.

Saved Searches

Searching for jobs is straightforward on PPH and to make it easier we created Saved Searches. This feature allows you to simply store any current search and retrieve the latest results with a single click!

  1. Go to the Jobs listing page.
  2. Perform a search as usual; type in any keywords, select result sorts or any filters (including categories / sub-categories or price ranges).
  3. On the right panel under Saved Searches click Save.
  4. Type in the name of the search and select when you want to receive updates (never, daily or instantly)

To edit or delete Saved Searches

Saved searches can be edited or deleted by hovering over the search name

Hire Me Widget

The Hire Me Widget is a great way for you to promote your PPH profile online and improve your chance to win work. It works by embedding an infobox on your own personal website. This provides links to your PPH profile page, an up-to-date feedback rating and links to your selected Offers. The widget is a chunk of HTML code that you can insert directly into your website. If you have access to edit the HTML on your website, you should be able to use the PeoplePerHour widget.

Why get the PPH Hire Me Widget?

How to get the Widget:

The widget is not designed to be embedded on a Facebook page but can be added to a personal sites where you can alter the HTML. This include sites powered by WordPress and other online tools. You can promote your PPH profile on Facebook (and other social media sites) by following the instructions on this page.

Freelancer Dashboard

Is the Profile views accurate on my Freelancer Dashboard?

Sorry but no, your profile view data isn't exactly accurate telemetry data. We store all profile views whether the viewer is a human or a bot, whether the view is from a guest or a logged in user, and whether the view is legit or malicious. This means, sometimes we will record anomalies and "view spikes".

One example of when Profile view counts become inaccurate is when our website suffers a Denial-Of-Service attack which can create a lot of view spam. Another example of when Profile view counts become inaccurate is when a foreign agent scrapes content off our website. A common reason why these crawlers do this is to gather training data for their AI models. There isn't much we can do about it I'm afraid.

Freelancer Profile

How do I Add more skills to my profile?

Freelancers can add the skills they wish to their profile via the edit page. You do not need to create a new PPH account as you can offer different services via the existing profile you have already set up.

Payments

Money Protection Guarantee

The key principle on PeoplePerHour is that payment to the Freelancer is only made when the agreed scope of work has been delivered, in accordance with Terms and Conditions.

Here is how the PPH Money Protection Guarantee works in practice:

  1. Funds are held in an Escrow account while work is in progress When a Job is agreed (whether a Buyer has purchased an Offer or accepted a Freelancer's custom Proposal) the Buyer pays a deposit of funds into an Escrow account. This gives the Freelancer assurance to start work and prevents the Buyer from paying any money to the Freelancer before the job has been completed.
  2. Payment only when Job Done Once the Job has finished the Freelancer raises an invoice for payment. If the Buyer is happy the work has finished they complete payment of the invoice which includes confirming the release of the funds held in Escrow to the Freelancer. If the Buyer is not satisfied that the job has finished then they can reject the invoice and provide the Freelancer with feedback on what work remains outstanding.
  3. Refunds & cancellations If the Freelancer does not complete the Job within the agreed timescales then the Buyer can request a refund of the money held in Escrow. If for any other reason the Buyer cancels a Job that has been in progress then the Freelancer may be entitled to at least some payment for work completed.
  4. Dispute resolution In the rare cases that the Buyer and Freelancer cannot agree over whether the Job is adequately finished and should be paid for or not then PPH Customer Support can provide assistance and if needed provide Dispute resolution to determine whether the funds in Escrow should be returned to the Buyer as a refund because the agreed job was not delivered; or whether the Freelancer is entitled to some or full payment for work delivered.

Adding a payment card

If you would like to use a new payment card such as a debit card or credit card, you can add this during checkout or can save it once payment has been completed. It will then be added to your profile.

Adding a bank account

We're afraid that bank accounts as a pay-in method aren't an option. A bank account can only be used by Freelancers for pay-out (withdrawals).

Vouchers

A voucher is also called a Discount code or Promo code.

Vouchers can only be used on our check out page.

Our vouchers cannot be used to pay an invoice. They can only be used for your escrow deposits. i.e The vouchers only give a discount on the deposit value NOT the invoice values. So if you would like to use a code that has been provided, please make sure that it is applied when you are paying for a deposit. When an invoice is raised, there will not be an option to enter the code.

Promo codes cannot be added manually if they are not added to the initial deposit phase. They can, however, be used on the next job that you would like to use it for.

Credit Notes

A credit note can only be provided to you from PeoplePerHour. A credit note cannot be withdrawn from your account and can only be used under our platform. Whenever you go to pay an invoice, or pay a deposit request for a custom proposal or purchase an Offer, simply select "PPH Account" as your payment method.

Escrow

Escrow is a legal arrangement in which a third party temporarily holds money or property until a particular condition has been met (such as the fulfillment of a purchase agreement). This is used on PeoplePerHour to protect buyers and freelancers in case issues arise during the completion of a Project. When a Buyer agrees to start work with a freelancer, whether by purchasing an Offer or by accepting a custom Job proposal, they are asked to pay some funds into an Escrow account. The amount paid into Escrow is the full price of the Offer service, if an Offer purchase, or a deposit amount as defined in the accepted Project proposal. These funds are not paid to the freelancer at this point. Instead, they are held on the Buyer's behalf by PPH so that the freelancer has some security before they start work, and so that the Buyer does not have to pay any money upfront before they have received the agreed deliverables. These funds are released from Escrow to the freelancer as payment under one of three circumstances:

Please note that funds will only become available for withdrawal after the clearing period, which can take approximately 14 working days to process. Please also be aware that National Bank Holidays may also have an impact on processing times.

Understanding the Escrow

When a buyer purchases an Offer service or accepts a custom Project proposal; they are asked to pay funds into an Escrow account.

These funds are held in the Escrow account until the project has finished and the Freelancer raises an invoice while the Buyer confirms they are happy that the project has completed and pays the invoice.

As a Freelancer, the Escrow facility provides you with security before you start working.

We urge that, for small projects or where you have no record working with the Buyer, you request either all the funds to be put in Escrow or agree to milestones, which need the payments pre-funded to escrow (as a deposit) before you start work on each milestone.

Please note: you do not need to raise an invoice for each milestone. All you need is to ensure that the funds are in place by requesting a deposit. It is usually best you complete the project and invoice for the whole lot in one go in the end.

How do I find my transaction history?

In PPH we understand the importance of downloading your Payment History. We provide:

  1. Transaction History - Once you have logged in your account select Payments > Transactions.
  2. Statements - Click on Statements in the Payments section for summaries and detailed breakdowns of all transactions on a monthly basis. You can view your statements for one year. We do not keep a full statement history when dated more than a year ago.
  3. Invoices - Your Invoices are also shown under our platform. You have the option to also select an Invoice for a Specific Job for more details.

Statements

In your Payments section of your account you will find statements which provide you with a clear view of all your income (earnings) and expenses (payments, PPH fees etc) for any month including the current month. With this feature you can:

Statements are shown in whichever currency your profile is set to.

At the top of each financial statement is a summary for the selected month. This shows totals for all income, PPH Service fees, payments made and other fees. If you are applicable to pay VAT, this is shown in the middle column.

Below the statement summary is an interactive breakdown of income and expenses, which lists all income and expenses by individual line items.

Only invoices that have been both paid by the Buyer and processed by PPH are included in statements as earnings (if you are the Freelancer) or Payments (if you are the Buyer). Funds held in Escrow either as a deposit for a Job or as the payment for an Offer will not be reflected in the Monthly Statement until payment is released by invoices being paid and then approved by PPH.

In the Breakdown section, individual items belonging to sub-categories can be shown / hidden by clicking the icons next to the category heading. Clicking the orange links on for the invoices will download a PDF copy of the invoice / credit note.

How to view your monthly statement

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Click on the user drop-down menu (top right) and select Payments
  3. Click on the Statements tab
  4. Select which month to view from the drop-down menu. By default you will be taken to the current month.

Generating Receipts

You'll be able to generate Receipts in the transactions tab of your payments page. Choose the payment you want a receipt for and the system will create a PDF for you.

Where can I see my earnings?

Your available earnings can be seen in your PeoplePerHour Account, under the Payments section > Transactions and then choose the option Earnings. This shows all funds available to withdraw. The amount held on deposit, under Escrow accounts, can be seen in your freelancer Escrow Account. You can also see all your transactions by selecting All Transactions and you will have more detailed information and also have the option to export them.

Raising a Dispute

We encourage freelancers and buyers to work together to try and resolve any disagreements. In most cases, issues can be easily resolved with some good communication, and have seen that 70% of Disputes are resolved before our Dispute Team involvement. We first recommend that you take a look at the "PPH Rules of Engagement" which are part of the terms and conditions for Job Delivery to make sure that you are acting in keeping with the T&Cs on PPH, and that you know what is expected of your Buyer or Freelancer too.

All Freelancers are encouraged to deliver great service to their Buyers which includes doing what they can to address any issues. As a Freelancer, you need to make sure you have provided revisions before raising a Dispute. If you haven't then the Dispute Team will get rejected by our team. When a Freelancer is about to raise a dispute they are asked to pay a Dispute Fee. (If the Dispute is cancelled then the Dispute Fee is automatically refunded to your PPH Account)

As a Buyer, We urge our Buyers to provide feedback when they are not happy with the work. Do not forget that your freelancer has spent time and effort to make sure the project is completed to your satisfaction.

If the Dispute is an overpayment of an invoice, the Buyer can reject it and explain to the Freelancer why they believe the payment should not be made. The Freelancer can then decide whether they agree with the Buyer and will, for example, finish the work correctly before raising a new invoice.

If the Freelancer still believes they should be paid for work delivered then they can raise a Dispute to our Dispute Team "Raise a Dispute" from the notification that they will have received in their WorkStream.

Multi-currency Account

In order to purchase an Offer or pay for a Project listed in a specific currency, you do not have to have the exact amount of that currency in your Wallet. You can complete your purchases using amounts stored in other currencies, which will be automatically converted in the required currency in the payments page.

For example, having $100, €100 and £100 does not disallow you from purchasing an Offer that costs £170. You can now complete your purchase without further hassle as the amounts you hold into your Wallet in other currencies will be automatically converted to the currency of the transaction.

Freelancer commission fees

There is no registration / sign-up fee, fees to search for projects, or even to post an offer. Therefore, PeoplePerHour charges the freelancer a service fee on earnings as follows:

Please also note:

How do I claim the VAT back?

All Users are provided with a statement at the end of each month showing their net effective commission fee in their ‘Payments' section on the Website.

If you are trading in the UK you can get VAT registered which allows you to claim back VAT from HMRC quarterly.

To find out how to get VAT registered please visit: https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/start/register/

PPH is partnered with Payoneer

Payoneer empowers global commerce by connecting businesses, professionals, countries and currencies with its innovative cross-border payments platform. With Payoneer’s fast, flexible, secure and low-cost solutions, businesses and professionals in both developed and emerging markets can now pay and get paid globally as easily as they do locally.

Freelancers can withdraw funds from their PPH wallet to a Payoneer card.

Those of you who already own a Payoneer card, you can use it whenever you withdraw your earnings from PPH. For those who don’t have a Payoneer card yet, you can order a new card through our site following a few, simple steps and start enjoying fast, secure international payments.

You need to go to your Settings page, click on “Payments”, then “Edit” next to “Withdrawal Accounts” and click to add a Payoneer account to your PPH account. Login to your Payoneer account if you already have one or complete the steps needed to order a new Payoneer card.

The Payoneer Prepaid MasterCard Card enables professionals to receive their payments within minutes. Benefits include:

Payoneer’s global banking network enables you to get funds to a local bank in your country, significantly reducing the cost of getting paid and avoiding delays.

One-Click Payments

When a buyer pays using a payment method, e.g. their credit card and if during checkout has the “Remember these details” checkbox enabled, then the user is eligible for express checkout with only 1 click for all future payments. This means that the next time a user tries to buy services through PeoplePerHour (example: accept a Proposal, pay an invoice, marking a Job as urgent, make an Offer or Proposal featured, etc) they no longer have to enter the details of their credit card or another used payment method. When you click the “Accept Proposal” button or “Pay invoice” then the payment is completed without asking again for the same details. Customers can disable 1 click payments from their account by going to the Payments section from the top menu, then click Payment methods and finally uncheck the checkbox “One-click payments enabled”.

Automatic Refunds

Similar to the automatic payment of invoices, we will automatically refund cash from escrow under certain circumstances. Automatic refunds are reviewed from our Payment team for security reasons.

Automatic refunds occur when a stream is deemed inactive. The Freelancer will then be alerted by email. They can take action to keep the WorkStream live.

Email notifications:

Circumstances for an automatic refund of escrow money:

Offer streams

Job streams

If you receive a notification that your money in the Escrow account for a particular project is being automatically refunded to you, one of two things will have happened:

I shouldn't get a refund / I need to pay the freelancer!

This automation is in place to prevent your funds from being held indefinitely in Escrow accounts for projects not delivered. In all cases before any funds are automatically refunded your freelancer will first receive notifications from us checking the status of the project to make sure something hasn't gone astray. The reminders ask the freelancer to take action to confirm if you aren't due for a refund.

If for some reason you freelancer didn't see or take action on these reminders and the project is still in progress they can:

Set up AutoPay

AutoPay is a feature available to members who joined our website before Nov/23. AutoPay allows buyers and freelancers to manage work delivered on an ongoing basis. Our AutoPay functionality replaces what we previously called “payroll request”.

How it works:

  1. A Buyer and freelancers are working together with fixed deliverables and payments every week or month.
  2. The buyer sets up the AutoPay feature by specifying the deliverables, the billing cycle to “weekly” or monthly“ and the amount to pay the freelancer.
  3. The buyer gives their payment details and at the end of every cycle they are charged automatically the amount specified
  4. The buyer or the freelancer can cancel anytime and stop the payments immediately

Benefits of AutoPay for Buyers:

  1. You get one or more freelancers that you trust to work for you for a fixed price contract that you define.
  2. No need to get numerous invoices and remember to review and pay them one by one!
  3. Fewer conflicts and questions from freelancers as it gets clear what they have to do and how and when they will be getting paid.

To set up AutoPay as a Buyer, Go to your WorkStream inbox, choose any WorkStream you have recurring billing with a freelancer, select “SET UP AUTOPAY” just above the messaging box, fill the details and that’s it! The freelancer will be notified and start working based on your requirements.

Benefits of AutoPay for freelancers:

  1. You start working with a fixed-price contract with Buyers that have ongoing needs.
  2. No need to remember to raise numerous invoices and check if the Buyers have paid them.
  3. Fewer conflicts and unnecessary communication to Buyers as it gets clear what they expect done and how and when they will be paying.

How to request AutoPay as a freelancer, Go to your WorkStream Inbox, choose any WorkStream you have recurring billing with a Buyer, select “MORE” > “REQUEST AUTOPAY” just above the messaging box, fill the details and wait for Buyer to approve.

Q: If a Buyer sets up AutoPay, does it need to be approved by a Freelancer? A: Yes, whoever Requests a AutoPay, it always needs Approval from the Buyer. i.e. If a Freelancer requests AutoPay, the Buyer needs to Approve. If the Buyer requests AutoPay, they themselves need to also approve it.

Clearing periods

Before any withdrawal of funds, we have to do a certain amount of checks for fraud prevention purposes. This is known as the clearing period. As we have grown as a business, we’ve been required to do more checks before we can release funds. Clearing periods are needed for us to protect you and your money from fraudulent criminal activity.

The length of your clearing period will be determined by how much you have earned on PeoplePerHour in the previous two calendar months.

For example, if today is the 17th June, we will look at your earnings between the 1st April and 31st May. If your earnings in April and May are £3,200, then your clearing period will be 7 days. The clearing period encompasses weekends as well as weekdays. So, using the example above with a clearing period of 7 days, if a buyer pays your invoice at 1.15pm on Thursday 17th June, your funds will be available to withdraw on Thursday 24th June at 1.15pm.

Following the clearing period, all withdrawal requests will be processed by the PeoplePerHour team within 2 working days.

We understand that you probably don’t know the exact amount that you’ve earned on our platform during the last two calendar months. That’s why we do the hard work for you to make it clear and easy to understand when you’ll be able to withdraw your earnings. Simply go to the “My Money” tab in the payments section of your account, and you’ll be able to see exactly how much money you’ve earned in the previous two months, and how long your clearing period will be as a result.

Finances and Taxation

Unfortunately, this is something you will have to take care of yourself as being a Freelancer means that you are responsible for your own taxation and finances. A good idea might be to search online for a specialist or consult the local authorities where you live.

Communications

Can I take communication off the site?

No, it’s against the terms and conditions to take any communication off the platform. These rules are put in place to protect both our buyers and freelancers. This is so that if there is a dispute we can intervene effectively by reviewing your communication in the project workstream. If you take communication off the platform, we won’t be able to support you in your dispute, and you won’t be protected.

Discussing requirements and making an agreement to start a Project should all be made directly in the WorkStream. Don't forget you can easily exchange files in the WorkStream, or if you are a Freelancer and want to share samples of your work, you can point the Buyer to your portfolio in your PeoplePerHour profile.

What should I do if a Buyer wants to communicate outside of the WorkStream?

Never take communication outside of the WorkStream within your project. If a buyer is insistent that they want to communicate through platforms like Telegram and Whatsapp, you will have no protection against a scam. By keeping the communication and project within the WorkStream, the buyer will have to pay a deposit before any work has started, and our team can intervene if any disputes arise. It’s against our terms and conditions to take communication off the PeoplePerHour website.

WorkStream Policies

The WorkStream is where all communication between Buyer and Freelancer is conducted in private. Via the WorkStream, the parties can exchange information including file attachments, send a Proposal or raise an Invoice, make payments, request a refund or raise a Dispute in relation to a Job.

In using the WorkStream we have just a few policies that Buyers and Freelancers are expected to stick to.

A violation of these policies may lead to actions not limited to warnings and account suspensions.

Why was my message removed?

We don't like to get in the way of our Buyers and Freelancers communicating together to get the Job done. We just have a few basic policies that apply when exchanging messages in the WorkStream. The policies include no exchange of contact details before an offer has been purchased or a proposal for a custom Job has been accepted.

PPH is a marketplace for connecting Buyers and Freelancers and all work and payment between a Buyer and Freelancer must be completed through the site.
To make sure that is the case all messages that include contact details before work has been agreed on PPH, will be removed and you will receive a message in your WorkStream to explain why.

PeoplePerHour Mobile App

We’ve made the decision to stop updating our PeoplePerHour mobile app.

Whilst we appreciate this may be disappointing news to hear, we believe this decision is the right one and should not hinder your PeoplePerHour experience.

We have made sure that our desktop and mobile website has all the same functionality of the App and we recommend using a web browser to access our freelance marketplace going forward.

Because of this decision, we will no longer be fielding any support requests for the mobile App.

We thank you for your understanding and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

Does PPH have a Mobile App?

No. However, the PPH website works well on small screens.

What are the allowed file types that I can upload to PPH?

The following is a list of the allowed file types and file extensions that can be uploaded and attached to a PPH WorkStream.

If the filetype you wish to use is not currently supported, one solution is to simply compress it as a zip file prior to uploading to the WorkStream. Always be cautious when transferring files online.

Image Dimensions Guide

If you're having trouble uploading images to your profile, then you've come to the right place for help! Below you'll find all the minimum and maximum dimensions for images that we accept on PeoplePerHour.

Offer images

The recommended size for the perfect offer image is 1280x720.

Best practice: Offer images are displayed in the search results when buyers search for an offer. This is why it's best practice to have a good quality image that demonstrates your skills and professionalism! Avoid too much text or unnecessary visuals on your offer images - make sure the image is pleasing to the eye.

Profile picture

Best practice: Having a picture of yourself is much more friendly and personable than the likes of a logo for example. Buyers want to get a sense of the person they may decide to do business with. Make sure that your photo is not blurry, and has good lighting and a basic background!

Cover image (also called Cover photo image)

The recommended size for the perfect Cover photo image is 1600x500 pixels.

Best practice: The cover image will be the largest image on your profile so you want to make it stand out! A good quality cover photo will make your profile more appealing and will set the tone for your work, so make it count.

Portfolio images

The Maximum portfolio total size is 100MB and up to 70 files.

Best practice: Your portfolio is for showing off your best work and favourite pieces - this is where your talent will really shine through with your choice of images, so take your time and choose the ones you think buyers will want to see. Avoid making collages and only include one sample of work per image - this is to ensure the buyer remains engaged and will quickly understand your work.

What files can be Uploaded to my portfolio?

Audio/images and video files can be added to your portfolio. However, there is a specific limitation concerning the file size. You can only add up to 70 files, or total size of 100MB.

This also depends on the type of file format you are using as there is some type of files that are not applicable on the platform. If you find you are having trouble uploading your file, you will need to contact the support team directly and they can talk you through the next steps.

Troubleshooting

Problems with Login

What does it mean if I see "Your email address has been banned. Please contact our support team."?

The PPH system detects potentially fraudulent activity and creates a block list of suspicious email addresses.

If you believe that your email address is in this block list incorrectly then please contact our customer support team.

Problems with your PPH Account

How to sign up as a freelancer

Great to hear you're interested in joining our platform. All you need to do is fill out a short application form. Once this is done, it’ll be reviewed by our moderation team within 7 working days. The link to get started: register. If your application is successful, you will then be able to start posting offers and communicating with buyers.

Switching from Buyer to Freelancer Account

You'd need to go through the Freelancer Application process to have a freelancer account. The easiest way to do this is to look for the "Post Offer" option on your account account (not Post project). This should then direct you to fill out the Freelancer application form.

How can I change my name?

At PeoplePerHour our Buyers and Freelancers are authentic therefore we urge all of our users to log in with their real names and profile pictures as we believe every true professional must be genuine. All of our users profile names need to be the same as their payment method account names, either their PayPal account or bank statement. In order to change their PeoplePerHour profile names, our users will need to contact our customer support team.

What do I need to provide in order to proceed with a name change?

Our users (freelancers or buyers) will need to provide us with proof of identification (National ID, Driving Licence or Passport). Those documents are private and should never be published online only send via email to our support team.

How can I change my Location?

To change your location, go to the Profile Edit page and select your location from the drop-down list. Please be aware that any changes to your location will be moderated before they become visible on your profile.

In some cases, your location may be locked and you will be unable to change your location settings. This is because PeoplePerHour has automatically updated your location to where you have accessed PeoplePerHour. We do this so that members of the site know which country other members are based in, which is important to our users when conducting work with each other.

Why has my country changed?

When using PeoplePerHour, it's important that your location settings are accurate and up-to-date. If we notice that the city and country you have selected in your profile is different from the place you regularly access PeoplePerHour from, we will update your details automatically. We do this so that members of the site know which country other members are based in, which is important to our users when conducting work with each other. If we make this change to your profile, the location settings will be locked so you will be unable to change your location settings. Instead you will see a tooltip notification when hovering over your country icon to alert you to this. If you think we have made a mistake and updated your location incorrectly, please contact the support team and provide proof of your location such as a utility bill showing your name and place of residence.

How do I reset my Security Question?

The Security Question is a important defense against your account getting Hacked. There isn't a way to reset your security question manually and you'll need to get in touch with the customer support team if you need your Security Question reset.

How do I change my Profile picture?

You can change your profile picture in the Edit Profile section of your account.

The reason why your profile picture may not have been uploaded immediately is because it's waiting to be approved by the moderation team. This doesn't mean that it wasn't unsuccessful, it just means that it's still to be reviewed. Please allow 24 hours for this change to be applied and ensure that the profile picture you're changing to is a picture of yourself and not a logo or cartoon. If you are registered under a company however, a company logo is acceptable.

How to Delete my PeoplePerHour account?

To delete your account, please email [email protected] and request account deletion. To ensure the safety and security of the community, all communications must be kept within the workstream and are outlined in our T&Cs. Please be aware that any communication outside the platform is strictly forbidden and is considered a breach of our T&Cs.

Anyone who mentions telegram is a particularly strong indicator of something that isn't a real project.
